Lumpkin County Sheriff’s
Office Citizens Advisory and Service Board
"Sheriff’s
Deputies Honored as Heroes"
Three Lumpkin County Deputies were
honored as heroes on the evening of May 22nd, 2008. The LCSO
Citizens Advisory and Service Board recognized Deputies Justin Ferguson,
Michael Herndon, and Sergeant Sterling Cole for unselfish acts of
heroism and exemplifying great courage during the course of their
duties. These deputies responded to a call for help from a home engulfed
in flames. They found Mrs. Peggy Walker lying on the ground on fire and
her neighbor, Dewayne Pinion, trying to put out the flames on Mrs.
Walker. As the flames continued to grow and without regard for personal
safety, these deputies risked their lives in trying to put out the
flames and moving Mrs. Walker to a safer location. Sadly Mrs. Walker
later passed away at the hospital.
The LCSO Citizens Advisory and Service
Board presented a plaque to each deputy while Sheriff Mark McClure
presented each with a commemorative coin for excellence and service to
our community. Sheriff Mark McClure also presented Mr. Dewayne Pinion
with a certificate of bravery and a commemorative coin for his selfless
service in helping someone in need.
The Citizens Advisory and Service
Board is proud of the Sheriff’s Office, our Deputies and their courage
and willingness to serve our community each day.
